The following is the criteria for admission to THVC or any Kentucky Veterans Homes, as specified in 17 KAR 3:040:
Must be a Veteran defined as someone who has​ served in the active military, naval or air service. 
Must have a military discharge that is not of a dishonorable nature
Must be a Kentucky resident as of the date of admission to a Kentucky Veterans Home
Must be disabled by reason of disease, wounds, age, or otherwise in need of nursing care

A Veteran shall not be eligible for admission if the person:
Has been diagnosed by a qualified healthcare professional as acutely mentally ill, as an acute alcoholic, as addicted to drugs, as continuously disruptive, or as dangerous to self or others;
Is ventilator dependent; or
Has needs that cannot be met by the Veterans Homes. ​

By definition of skilled nursing care, a Veteran must need nursing care on a 24/7 basis. This can include assistance with daily living skills such as assistance with dressing, bathing, transferring, eating or medication management.  ​

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can the spouse of a Veteran be admitted to THVC?
A: No. You must be a Veteran to qualify for admission to any Kentucky State Veteran home.

Q: Can I be placed on the waiting list before I submit my application?
A: You must submit your application and all the required documentation before you are placed on the waiting list.

Q: Does Medicare or Medicaid pay for my stay at THVC?
A: THVC accepts Medicaid or Medicare payments for certain qualified stay situations.  Contact our financial office for details.

Q: If I am Service Connected, does this get me in faster or give me priority for admission to THVC?
A: All decisions for admission are based on nursing care needs and the urgency of each individuals' situation.

Q: How long does it take to get admitted to THVC?
A: We process the applications as quickly as possible and fill our beds as soon as they become available.

Q: Does THVC have a locked psychiatric unit?
A: We are not licensed for psychiatric nursing care.

Q: Can I bring my car/truck to THVC?
A: Personal vehicles are not permitted at THVC.

Q: Is there a preadmission process to be completed?

A:Yes, preadmission documents are required to begin the process of review for admission. The Admissions Coordinator can answer questions about the process. Q: Does THVC have any Assisted Living apartments?
A: We are strictly a nursing home; only those Veterans who require nursing care by a registered nurse, qualify to stay at THVC.

Q: Does THVC accept Veterans who are on a ventilator?
A: We do not accept ventilator patients.​​
