One primary mission of the board is to advocate for veterans in the Commonwealth. We strive to be information gatherers, seekers, and researchers in order to voice the concerns and issues most important to Kentucky’s veterans. 

What is the Governor’s Advisory Board for Veterans’ Affairs?

The Governor’s Advisory Board for Veterans’ Affairs (GABVA) was created by Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS) 40.305 to be attached to the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs (KDVA). The board’s primary role is to advise the Commissioner and the Governor on the administration of veterans’ services programs. The Commissioner shall advise the Governor on matters relating to veterans’ affairs. The Commissioner and the Board shall advise the General Assembly on matters relating to veterans’ affairs and the administration of veterans’ service programs. 

Who is on the GABVA?

The advisory board is composed of seven (7) members appointed by the Governor, two (2) of whom shall be recommended by the Joint Executive Council of Veterans Organizations of Kentucky (JECVO). The Executive Director of the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs (KCMA) and The Adjutant General (TAG) of the Commonwealth are also members of the board. Members of the board shall meet at least quarterly and at such other times as the chairperson may designate.
