Lexington Rescue Mission
Lexington Mission provides coffee and pastries from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and serves hot, nutritious lunches from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Breakfast and lunch are free and open to anyone in need. All meals are served at our Outreach Center at 444 Glen Arvin Avenue.
STREET OUTREACH
Community connections are built and wraparound services are provided to community members experiencing homelessness on the streets, by meeting with them where they are and walking with them to encourage hope and decisions toward life change. The Street Outreach team goes into homeless outdoor communities to meet people’s physical, spiritual, emotional mental health, and behavioral health needs. Wounds are bandaged, spiritual needs are tended to, referrals and assistance to treatment programs are provided, and case management is offered to help achieve a successful transition to housing.
HOMELESS INTERVENTION PROGRAM
The Mission helps individuals and families who are homeless move into their own homes by providing financial assistance for the first month’s rent as well as individual budget counseling, resource referral, and case management. If you need help moving from homelessness into permanent housing, please come to our walk-in hours for eligibility screening and assistance. Lady Veterans Connect is an organization created to provide high-quality, comprehensive services to assist female veterans in transitional support and prevent homelessness. Founded in 2012 under the name Sheppards Hands by Phyllis Abbott, LVC was officially renamed in 2016 and opened the first transitional healing home, the Thurman-Abbott House, for female veterans in Kentucky. Since then, LVC has connected over 500 lady veterans in Kentucky with needed resources, and not a single night has passed without occupancy in the Thurman-Abbott House. As of 2019, Lady Veterans Connect board members and volunteers logged over 28,000 hours serving veterans. LVC has purchased and has currently completed renovations on a previous elementary school in Winchester, KY to house 32 female veterans.
Hope
The HOPE Center was awarded a Per Diem Program grant for veterans in September 2008 by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. The Hope Center receives a daily per diem payment for serving up to 30 Veterans.
To be eligible for the Grant Per Diem Program, a veteran must have a discharge from the service for reasons other than dishonorable. The Hope Center assists these homeless veterans by providing them with help in the areas of recovery, employment, and mental health.
The Veterans Coordinator also assists veterans with obtaining copies of their DD214s, and with determining what benefits they may be eligible for through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, including health care, education, etc. This program also allows homeless veterans who participate in the Recovery Program, the Employment Program, and the Mental Health Program, to live at the Hope Center at no cost to them while they are getting their lives back on track.
Mountain Comprehensive Care Center
Mountain Comprehensive Care Center provides rental assistance programs that provide temporary rental assistance for persons with low income, special needs, and/or experiencing homelessness. We also provide Permanent Supportive Housing in our Shelby Valley Independent Living Apartments and Douglas Park Independent Living Apartments in Pike County, as well as our Dogwood Apartments in Prestonsburg.
