High School Diploma Program for Veterans of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War

Iwo Jima Flag-RaisingMore than 60 years after WWII broke out, the Kentucky legislature passed House Bill 45 authorizing school districts to issue high school diplomas to veterans whose high school education was interupted by the global conflict. The 2004 General Assembly passed House Bill 113 which authorized diplomas for veterans who served during the Korean War. Further, HB 230 passed during the 2005 session authorizing diplomas for Vietnam veterans.

All we need in order to get the ball rolling is an application and a copy (not the original) of the veteran's discharge papers. Send these items to:

We will verify the service and provide written verification to the school district and the veteran.

65 Years Later

Eugene Thomas Hampton
Union, Kentucky

July 28, 2008

Attn:  Brigadier General Les Beavers

Please allow me the opportunity to thank you and your Department for the honor bestowed upon me at the Walton, Kentucky Memorial Day celebration.  As an 18 year old farm boy, I dropped out of the Harrison County school system in 1943 to join the Navy.  After the war I never found the time to complete my high school education, thus never received a high school diploma.

Mr. Dennis Glacken informed me that I may be able to actually receive a high school diploma.  He helped me through the enitre process and on Memorial Day, 2008, I was awarded my high school diploma, 65 years after the fact!  I will never be able to properly thank Mr. Glacken for all he has done for me.

Thank you, your department and especially Mr. Glacken for making a dream come true.

With sincere thanks,

Eugene Thomas Hampton
High School Graduate
