On February 2, 2009, Governor Steve Beshear appointed former United States Representative Ken Lucas to serve as Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Veteran's Affairs.
In this capacity, Rep. Lucas is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Department of Veteran's Affairs as well as the coordination of 18 statewide field office locations, healthcare outreach and cemetery services.
Rep. Lucas is a distinguished public servant who has dedicated his life to the betterment of the Commonwealth and the nation. Born and raised in Grant County, Rep. Lucas joined the United States Air Force shortly after his graduation from the University of Kentucky. During his 12 year career—first in the US Air Force and then the Air National Guard—Lucas maintained a reputation as a first-class pilot, eventually attaining the rank of Major.
Rep. Lucas earned a Master’s of Business Administration from Xavier University, then spent 32 years working in banking and finance.
In 1998, Rep. Lucas was elected to represent Kentucky’s Fourth District in the U.S. House of Representatives where he served his Northern Kentucky constituents for three terms, then retired to fulfill his promise to term-limit himself. As a Congressman, Lucas proved to be a tireless advocate for veteran’s affairs.
